Is Google Trying to do Too Much?

Let me start by saying that I love Google.  I've had a gmail account before they were "available" and I've used Google as my search engine when they first came on to the scene.  Now Google is everywhere, and I'm not knocking that, except that since the beginning of January, and especially over the past couple of days, I've experienced issues just trying to get to gmail and Google.com.  I thought it was my internet connection at home, but I've had the same problem everywhere, not just at home.  I actually had to use Yahoo as my search engine yesterday!

Anyway, I'm not hopping on my soapbox this morning because it's Saturday and I'm getting ready to go for a run, but I was frustrated again trying to read my email and I'm just curious if I'm the only one experiencing these Google "growing pains?"  I feel as though Google might be trying to do too much with too many things at once (you know, searching through my email content so they can place ads on my screen...I'd rather be able to just open my mail), and maybe they are slipping on the basics, like keeping the existing stuff working while trying to be everywhere?  I hope not.
